One of Us! Rory and Matt

Rory is a human golfer. Thank you, Rory!

Another big news related to ā€œOne of Usā€ is ā€œthe best round-the worst round.ā€ Matt Every was as a leader with 65 (-7) at the first round, ended up missing cut with 83 (+11) at the second round. The best round followed by the worst round. Sounds familiar.

Mar. 5 : Montebello Golf Course – Our Old Time Course

I used to live in Arcadia 5 years ago and often play at Montebello golf course. Until last year, I sometimes went there to play because its location is in the middle between my friends and me. Also, it was not crowded usually, so you could easily finish a round 3 and half hour. It was a decent course.

Not any more! Today it was packed with golfers and some fivesomes. Slow pace. The course condition was horrible and greens were so bumpy. Still green fee is as much as other city public courses. Ending a score 95 with 42 putts.

They don’t even have a green aerification plan yet. šŸ™

I heard they had a new management three days ago. We may come back a couple of month later to see how they change. Not before then.

Mar. 3 Wilshire Country Club: Ladies Guest Day / Low Gross Team Winner!

I am very thankful that Kelly, my friend invited me to her guest day at Wilshire club today. I’ve been a close friend with her for 9 years, but she has been so far from where I am at golf. Her handicap is 7 and she plays golf on another level. She is the only one who has more passion on golf than me among my golf buddies.

Today I scored 99! 99 Sounds a lot for many golfers, but not for me, especially at this golf course. The lowest score I got at Wilshire Country Club. My shots were not bad, but short game and putting were bad. 42 putts today. It is a difficult green for me even with caddie’s help.

We had a two better ball game. We were disappointed with results after announcing all three low net teams. What a surprise! We won a low gross team with a little gift card prize. All four of us contributed some for a team score, but this seems a lot to me. I always feel so nervous when we do a team play, but today I was able to focus more with all lower handicap players: 7, 11 and 16. All three ladies can easily drive 200 yards. What a good game today.

Sungjae Im, Honda Classic Winner: A Long Wait

I’ve been waiting so long to see Sungjae Im’s first PGA tour win. Sungjae Im is the highest ranker among Korean PGA players. I watched many tournaments he was on the first page of leaderboard and went further down from leaders. He showed consistent play in 2019 and became the rookie of year 2019. But he had no luck with a trophy.

Today he looked so calm, but confident. As he mentioned on his interview, all experience as one of leaders at many tournaments helped him less nervous on the final competition. Yeah! He made it!

Ever since I met him in person at Genesis Invitational, I became a big follower of his play. He was probably the nicest player I’ve seen. At 18th hole’s fairway during his pro-am round, he came to my buddy and me, and gave autographs. At the putting green, he welcomed us and posed for a photo.

I am so happy for him today. Time to go for Fedex cup!

Who Watches This Show? Me!? Most Ridiculous Discussion I’ve Watched.

Who cares if Brooks Koepka needs to be friendlier? This 13 min discussion about Koepka’s comment about friendship on tour is so insane. How can they make a show talking about it. The topic is nothing, but I can’t believe they had a heated discussion. I can’t also believe I watched it because the discussion sounded insane and I wanted to see how silly it was. Koepka is one of my least favorite tour pros, but no one should tell him to change his personality. He doesn’t need to be everyone’s favorite.

Good Practice, Bad Practice

From time to time, there is one day I feel l am completely lost.

Today I focused my iron swing change. It was a good practice, but it was not quite right as what I wanted. I didn’t want to hit a lot of driver shots, because I had really nice driver shots yesterday round and I was confident on my driver.

At my practice today, I felt I was completely lost and forgot how to swing. I missed the half of my practice shots. I was about to hit 10 to 20, but ended up hiting 80 driver shots. Still, I didn’t have the ā€œFeel.ā€ I am not a beginner, so I know what it is. I’ve felt this way so many times in my previous practices. That didn’t discourage me so much, because I know I will find it. But it was very frustrated. I tried to stretch my arms more to right instead to back. That makes less body turn. I couldn’t make my hip turn smoothly. I should focus more on consistency of my driver. Still a long way~

Feb. 27 Industry Hills Ike Course: Should I ?

I started with par at par5 first hole with a driver and woods. For my second shot at second hole, my ball with 9 iron fell into water and mafe triple bogey. I don’t usually make that kind mistake with my irons. A lot of amateur golfers get frustrated after trying something new on swing at a golf roumd. I felt a little awkward at takeaway trying wrist hinge. Maybe next hole.

I was ok with a par and two bogeys with no irons at 3,4 and 5 th hole. Disaster started after using irons at 6,7 and 8, making a triple, a quadruple and a double par. I got a temptation to go back to my swing without trying angles. I gave myself a last chance at 9th hole. My ball flew nicely and too far. But I felt so good with my little change on swing. I found some confidence.

My round ended up + 28 (101). My front 9 was + 17 and back 9 was + 11. Mostly I was happy to add angles on my swing and it worked eventually. Well. It will take a long time to be comfortable, but I can do it. Can’t wait to go to driving range tomorrow.

I like 17th hole at Ike.

Best part of today was lunch. I like to go to Red at this golf course for lunch. They have good food and nice atmosphere.

Adding More Angles

Whenever I take a video of my swing, I get so frustrated and feel so embarrassed. So many things have been changed through practice, but still so many things I really want to change. Everyone’s swing is different and nobody is perfect. There are some common motions most professional players have and I want to have. Every change takes long time, but I don’t mind.

Today lesson was adding more angles on my swing. Wrist hinge is a controversial part for golfers. Some pros say you don’t need to and some says you should. After the lesson, I prefer adding some wrist hinge when I take away. I feel more angles on my wrists on backswing and on the top. My swing seems tighter, but impact is better.

One of my prior coach asked me to make early wrist hinge 7 years ago. I made angles very noticeable and uncomfortable. It was my swing for 2 years and I changed a coach. My another coach was really against my wrist angle at takeaway. I took a long time to get rid of angles. Now I am with coach Alex and he wants to add it to my swing. He said I don’t need to, if I don’t want to. Of course, I want to! But I know he will teach me a right way to do, not like my early year swing with awkward hinges.

Spent 4 hours at a driving range. Finally, it looked ok. But still a lot of practice needed to make it mine.
