Golf Wannabe

Today I played with Cindy and her son. I couldn’t recognize her with a mask at the first tee box. Seeing her great play, I noticed it was her! She probably played at Rancho instead of her club to help her son practice.

I played with Cindy one year ago at Mountain Gate Country Club. Cindy invited Kelly to their ladies club holiday tournament and Kelly asked me to join it. Cindy was the chairman of ladies club, the club champion and the party host.

Imagine a 25 handicapper played with three ladies with single digit handicaps. All three ladies in our group used to be the club champions. I was so nervous, worrying if I kept missing shots and making mistakes like some rounds.

Cindy was the lady who kept saying ‘good shot’ to my decent balls and cheered me up if I made some mistakes. All three ladies made me comfortable not to worry about scores. It ended up as a good round to me with my long game, even though my short game was terrible as usual.

Not only her scores, but her manner made her as a great player. Back then, I learned how I respected other players. I thought I would be like her to other players.

Today was a good round to me. Scored + 16 with all counts. I scored more than + 30 at the Mountain Gate tournament with some conceded putts one year ago.

As some of my friends have memberships at MountainGate, I’ve played there a lot since a beginner. This short par 3 at 6th hole lake course was the scariest hole during my old days.

SY Kim: Win with a Spoiler

SY Kim’s play at Pelican today reminded me of DJ’s play. They were too experienced to make drama during recent tournaments. Steady play and no excitement while watching their games. It is like watching a movie with a spoiler.

Still, I like Sei Young Kim a lot. She was really nice to fans whenever I saw her at tournaments. I notice she changed her fashion, skincare and makeup style during pandamic. She looks more lovely with a red skirt.

Lessons vs Self-Study

My swing may not look as I took lessons from several instructors for years. Once a week from 2011 to 2014 and from 2018 to 2020 before pandamic. In my basic mind, a teaching pro is the god of golf. I just followed what they said. I didn’t try to learn golf by myself, because there were many ways to hit balls and I didn’t have enough knowledge to tell right or wrong. All instructors had different ways and believed their own ways were right. Now I realize how ignorant I was of golf. I knew almost nothing about golf. It needs a life time learning.

The more I learn about golf, the more I feel I need lessons again. When I go back to lessons after pandamic, lessons will be more efficient after having more knowledge on golf.

It is funny all I tried to change my driver swing recently was from a fade to a draw. Unintentionally, I have a draw for irons and a fade for the driver through years. It takes a long long time to make any little change.

At this moment, I focused on a steady head during takeaway. Still, this was the best try I could do today.
Most my fade balls carry more than 150 yards. Maybe, it is ok to keep a fade at this moment, focusing more on reducing slices.

A Main Reason for Walking a Golf Course

After staying home order for a couple of months, the main topic for my friends and me was gaining weights. I used to be very active outside of home and keep moving, but all of a sudden, I gained 10 pounds for two months while staying home.

Playing with a golf cart didn’t help losing weights. I couldn’t still give up cookies and wine. This summer I decided to push a cart and walk. Now I love to walk on the course. Really great feeling! I don’t sit for 5 hours during a round. Just walk. Even if I play with three players riding carts, I feel comfortable with my pace and play.

Here are some benefits from walking in my case.

– Feel free to eat whatever I want: cookies, crackers, chocolates, wine, etc.

– Maintaining my physical shape.

– Thinking about a course management while walking

– Focusing on my game more. I don’t have time to get distracted by my smart phone.

– Don’t need to help finding balls for players whose balls fly everywhere. (I still try my best to help)

– Less wait time. Don’t need to talk to some annoying golfers while waiting.

– Feeling and looking like a serious golfer.

– I wouldn’t say about health benefit, because I walk not mainly for health, but for my sweet tooth. (Less walk with no junk food may be more beneficial for health.)

Yay! I allow me to have 500 calorie snacking.

Today’s Swing

Today I focused on In-to-In (out) impact path.
Changing set-up (left arm higher than right arm) helps creat in-to-in club path easier. This was yesterday’s video. This set-up helped swings for all clubs more accurate during my game today.

First Time Trade-In Golf Clubs

I am satisfied with my current golf clubs. Unless another big technology comes, I may keep them for a while. I usually keeps my old clubs in the garage, in case I want to use them again. Finally, I am ready to let them go, instead of storing them in the garage for years.

I exchanged 4 clubs with $ 211 Roger Dunn’s store credit. Epic Driver 2017, XXIO Driver 2016, M4 3wood 2017, Odyssey Hot O putter. I thought it would be ok to get $ 100 for these useless clubs. Happy with $ 211.

My Drivers Since 2018

XXIO ➡️ Callaway Epic (Stolen) ➡️ Callaway Rogue ➡️ Callaway Epic ➡️ PRGR Red ➡️ Taylormade SIM

I left work in 2018. Since then, I’ve got more time to enjoy golf. When I traded in clubs today, I counted how many drivers I owned since 2018. 6 different drivers! I am a typical recreational golfer to find distances and swings by changjng clubs. No more changing clubs.

Today I shortened SIM driver a half inch to 44.5 inch. Now it seems just right!

A Real Master

Today I cried for the first time while I watched a golf tournament. Tiger’s birdie on 18th hole. Unbelievable 5 birdies for the last 6 holes after 10 stroke lost on par 3 12th hole. More emotionally touching than any wins. Never give up your game.

Augusta 12th hole made another historical moment.

Today’s Swing

Last week vs today. Still a lot more for follow-through, but getting better little by little.
LPGA top rankers Jinyoung Ko, Daniel Kang. Feeling better to know fade and draw. I don’t need to go crazy about this.
Long hitters: Sei Young Kim and Bianca Pagdanganan. Hmmmm… I just need to make my comfortable swing.
